Changes made to a planned multifamily residential development in Lenexa gained unanimous approval from the city’s planning commission this week.

The Lenexa Planning Commission on Monday voted 7-0 to approve rezoning and a preliminary plat for The Residences at Woodsonia, a development between Woodsonia Drive and Monticello Road. Commissioners Cara Wagner and Mike Burson were absent.

The Kansas City-based Sunflower Development Group is leading the project and would be split into two parts: 10 three-story apartment buildings containing 240 units total, along with 11 other buildings containing a total of 62 two-story townhomes. It will also include shared amenities, such as a clubhouse, pool, dog park and pickleball courts. The townhomes will also have garages.

The $261 million renovation just got its first major tenant, which will take up 60,000 square feet of office space once the construction is complete.

In a Thursday, Nov. 30, event held at the Downtown skyscraper, ground was ceremonially broken on the project to reinvent and reimagine the 100 N. Main Building.

The extensive $838 million Homefield development near 94th Street and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, primarily focuses on youth sports facilities with the baseball complex slated for a spring opening. Commercial components and attractions including the Margaritaville Hotel developed by Sunflower Developments have a completion date expected in 2025.

Homebase, which developed a smart building technology platform, will retain its name and Kansas City office after its sale to Quext, a Lubbock, Texas-based technology company that owns and manages more than 20,000 apartment units throughout Texas. The Quext team understands the multifamily industry and what it needs which is key for Homebase, which has started attracting large-scale apartment developers as customers, who own and operate thousands of apartments such as Sunflower Development Group.

If the Plaza changes ownership, which could happen by the end of the year, some of the developments around the iconic shopping center may see even more progress. Including Block and Sunflower’s apartment proposal at 4627 Madison Ave. which would sit just north of the Plaza Corporate Centre office building.

Thousands of people and millions of dollars will pour into downtown Kansas City this weekend as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament returns. The Kansas City Sports Commission estimates a $14.5 million economic impact for the city which will set records for hotels, restaurants and other local businesses -including a sold out Ambassador Hotel. “Turns out that this is going to be one of the highest revenue generating months since the hotel’s existence,” said John Anastaopoulos, the general manager of the hotel. “You can’t beat that.”

A program that provides affordable housing to women recovering from substance abuse and their children intends to build a 37-unit development at 28th and Tracy. Amethyst Place, which currently operates a similar-size development and 27th and Troost, is planning the $15.4 million project that’s expected to begin construction this spring and be completed by late 2024.

Construction of a new luxury apartment complex is officially underway on the long-vacant site of the former Mission Bowl in downtown Mission. The abandoned bowling alley at 5399 Martway Street — which was gutted by fire in 2015 — was torn down last year, and on Wednesday, developers, city officials and investors gathered for an official groundbreaking ceremony for the apartment project replacing it, now dubbed The Residence on Rock Creek.

Johnson County will help subsidize a new project to bring workforce housing to Shawnee. On Thursday the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted 5-2 to issue a $1 million loan to support the construction of the Hedge Lane Apartments.  The developers, Consolidated Housing Solutions and Sunflower Development Group, intend to create a 144-unit apartment complex near 75th Street and K-7 Highway in Shawnee.

“We have the tallest rooftop pool in Kansas City, and what’s nice about our rooftop is it’s open year round, so our residents can have that outdoor space, they can get that fresh air, even in the winter time, when the pool should be closed,”

Renovations have kicked off on Reconciliation Services’ historic building on the southeast corner of 31st and Troost in Kansas City, Mo.

The project, developed by Reconciliation Services, includes project partners Sunflower Development Group, LM2 Construction, Straub Construction, BNIM and MC Realty Group.

Dirt recently started moving on a 221-apartment complex called The View at Castle Rock that will include office and retail space, according to a news release. The $70 million project, located on Sixth and Jerry streets, is being built by a group called Castle Rock View Investors. The team includes Block Real Estate Services, Sunflower Development Group, First Construction, architecture firm CT Design and general contractor Vertix Builders.

The $70 million public-private project will deliver 221 apartments and office and retail space to downtown Castle Rock.

Construction on the $70 million mixed-use project, known as the View in Castle Rock, kicked off March 9 with a groundbreaking ceremony. In late January, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, approved a revised development agreement providing for the additional STAR bonds in two tranches, to be unlocked once Homefield hits certain private investment thresholds, plus several deadline extensions for project components.

Monday the Roeland Park City Council approved two land purchase agreements with Sunflower Development Group for roughly seven acres of land near 4800 Roe Parkway. The developer purchased four city lots for roughly $3.45 million. The council voted to approve both agreements 7-1.

A pair of commercial real estate companies has purchased a historical downtown Cincinnati office building with an eye on potentially converting the building to a different use. Sunflower Development Group and Block Real Estate Services purchased the Cincinnati Club Building, located at 30 Garfield Place, from Vulcan Property Management Co. at the end of November for $4.35 million.
